Build the idea

Do this: Read each idea, then say it in your own words.

Key words

  • Key word · Unit 9Unit circleA circle of radius one centered at the origin.Exactly: The points (x,y) satisfying x2+y2=1. At angle θ, the point is (cos⁡θ,sin⁡θ).Mix-up alert: Cosine is the horizontal coordinate; sine is the vertical coordinate.See this in Key words

    1. Coordinates define sine and cosine

On the Key word · Unit 9Unit circleA circle of radius one centered at the origin.Exactly: The points (x,y) satisfying x2+y2=1. At angle θ, the point is (cos⁡θ,sin⁡θ).Mix-up alert: Cosine is the horizontal coordinate; sine is the vertical coordinate.See this in Key words, the terminal point for angle θ is (cos⁡(θ),sin⁡(θ)). The radius is 1, so cos2⁡(θ)+sin2⁡(θ)=1.

    1(cos θ, sin θ)
  2. 2

    2. Reference angles and signs

A reference angle is the acute angle between a non-axis terminal side and the x-axis. Use familiar 30-,45-,60∘ values and set the signs from the quadrant.

  3. 3

    3. Exact special values

For special angles π6,π4,π3, the sine values are 12,22,32, and the cosine values reverse that list. Keep exact forms unless rounding is requested.

  4. 4

    4. Tangent and excluded inputs

The tangent ratio is sin⁡(θ)cos⁡(θ), defined when cos⁡(θ) is nonzero. At π2 and 3π2, the unit-circle x-coordinate is zero, so tangent is undefined.

Step-through

Follow one checked example

Do this: Move through the four steps and check each number.

Find sin⁡(5π6),cos⁡(5π6), and tan⁡(5π6).

Worked example

Use a quadrant-IV angle

Do this: Follow each step on paper before reading the result.

  1. Step 1: Find the terminal coordinates for 7π4.
  2. Step 2: Its reference angle is π4, with cosine positive and sine negative.
  3. Step 3: The point is (22,−22).
  4. Step 4: The tangent is -1, and the coordinate squares sum to 1.

Worked example

Use an axis point

Do this: Follow each step on paper before reading the result.

  1. Step 1: A rotation of 3π2 reaches the bottom of the unit circle.
  2. Step 2: The coordinates are (0,−1).
  3. Step 3: cos⁡(3π2)=0 and sin⁡(3π2)=−1.
  4. Step 4: tan⁡(3π2) is undefined because it would require division by zero.

Mix-up alert

Common mistake

Do this: Explain the wrong idea and the repair.

Wrong idea: sine is the horizontal coordinate because it is named first in SOHCAHTOA. Repair: on the unit circle the order is (cos⁡(θ),sin⁡(θ)); cosine is horizontal and sine is vertical.

Tip

Do Now · Easy · Paper reference

Do this: Use paper. State the definition before you calculate.

At the top of the unit circle, what are cosine and sine? They are 0 and 1 respectively.

Worked example

Guided practice · Medium · Paper reference

Do this: Work on paper and explain each step before checking it.

For the ray through (7,24):

  1. Step 1: Radius is 25.
  2. Step 2: Normalize to (725,2425).
  3. Step 3: Cosine and sine are those coordinates.
