Do Now · Easy

Do this: Try this on paper, then compare with the worked check.

Key words

  • Key word · Unit 5Completing the squareRewrite a quadratic using a squared binomial.Exactly: Rewrite x2+bx=(x+b2)2−(b2)2, with a leading coefficient factored out or normalized first.Mix-up alert: Adding a quantity to one side of an equation requires adding it to the other side.See this in Key words

What number completes x2+8x+⋯ to a square? Check: half of 8 is 4 and its square is 16, giving (x+4)2.

Big ideas

Build the idea

Do this: Read each idea, then explain it in your own words.

  1. 1

    1. Make a square

For x2+bx, add (b2)2 to make a perfect square. In an expression, subtract the same number to preserve its value.

  2. 2

    2. Handle the leading coefficient

When the leading coefficient is not 1, factor it out of the x2 and x terms before completing the square. Track its multiplication of any correction.

  3. 3

    3. Read the vertex

The vertex form a(x−h)2+k has vertex (h,k). The vertex is a minimum for a>0 and a maximum for a<0.

  4. 4

    4. Solve and check

For (x−h)2=c with c>0, use x=h+c or h−c. If c=0 there is one root; if c<0 there are no real roots. Check in the original equation.

Worked example

Guided practice · Medium

Do this: Cover each worked step and try it on paper before reading on.

Rewrite −2x2+12x−7. Factor to −2(x2−6x)−7, then obtain −2(x−3)2+18−7=−2(x−3)2+11. The vertex is (3,11) and the maximum is 11.

Step-through

Follow one checked example

Do this: Move through the four steps and check the numbers.

Rewrite 2x2−12x+7 in vertex form.

Worked example

Solve with two square roots

Do this: Work each step on paper before reading the result.

Solve x2+8x+7=0. Move 7: x2+8x=−7. Add 16 to both sides: (x+4)2=9. Thus x+4=3 or -3, giving x=−1 or -7. Checks: 1−8+7=0 and 49−56+7=0.

Worked example

Keep exact irrational roots

Do this: Work each step on paper before reading the result.

Solve x2−6x+2=0. Then x2−6x=−2. Add 9: (x−3)2=7. The exact roots are 3+7 and 3−7. Substitution using (x−3)2=7 gives x2−6x+2=7−9+2=0.

Mix-up alert

Common mistake

Do this: Explain the mistake and its repair.

Wrong idea: x2+6x=(x+3)2. Repair: the square adds 9, so write x2+6x=(x+3)2−9. For an equation, add 9 to both sides instead.
