Key words

  • Key word · Unit 9Trigonometric equationAn equation with trigonometric expressions whose allowed solutions you must find.Exactly: An equality involving trigonometric functions, solved on a stated interval or as a general solution.Mix-up alert: Dividing by a factor can lose solutions where that factor is zero.See this in Key words
  1. 1

    1. Isolate the trig value

A linear trig equation such as 3sin⁡(x)−1=0 is solved first with algebra: sin⁡(x)=13. This lesson uses one unsquared trig function, without products of trig functions.

  2. 2

    2. Use the requested interval

A solution interval controls which angles to keep. [0,2π) includes 0 and excludes 2π; 0∘≤x<360∘ uses degree answers.

  3. 3

    3. Find every matching quadrant

A reference angle gives a magnitude; the trig sign tells you the possible quadrants. Sine is positive in I and II, cosine positive in I and IV, and tangent positive in I and III.

  4. 4

    4. Check range and domain

The range of sine and cosine is [−1,1], so a target outside it gives no real solutions. Tangent is undefined at π2+kπ for integer k. Substitute candidates in the original equation and keep only interval members.

Step-through

Follow one checked example

Do this: Move through the four steps and check each number.

Solve 2cos⁡(x)+1=0 for 0≤x<2π.

Worked example

Solve with degree inputs

Do this: Follow each step on paper before reading the result.

  1. Step 1: Solve 2sin⁡(x)−1=0 for 0∘≤x<360∘.
  2. Step 2: sin⁡(x)=12=22.
  3. Step 3: Positive sine gives x=45∘ or 135∘.
  4. Step 4: Both return 2(22)−1=0.

Worked example

Use the tangent period

Do this: Follow each step on paper before reading the result.

  1. Step 1: Solve tan⁡(x)+1=0 on [0,2π).
  2. Step 2: tan⁡(x)=−1, with reference angle π4.
  3. Step 3: Tangent is negative in quadrants II and IV, so x=3π4 or 7π4.
  4. Step 4: Both are defined and make the original left side zero.

Mix-up alert

Common mistake

Do this: Explain the wrong idea and the repair.

Wrong idea: the first calculator angle is the complete solution set. Repair: check the other matching quadrant and periodic copies in the stated interval. Also reject any target outside the sine or cosine range.

Tip

Do Now · Easy · Paper reference

Do this: Use paper. State the definition before you calculate.

On 0≤θ<2π, explain why both 0 and 2π can have the same coordinates while only one is in the interval.

Worked example

Guided practice · Medium · Paper reference

Do this: Work on paper and explain each step before checking it.

Solve cos⁡θ=1 on 0≤θ<4π.

  1. Step 1: Cosine is 1 at integer full turns.
  2. Step 2: Select 0 and 2π.
  3. Step 3: Reject 4π because the upper endpoint is excluded.
