For p(x)=4x3−2x+9, the degree is 3, leading coefficient is 4 and constant term is 9. Check each label against its meaning.

Big ideas

Build the idea

Do this: Read each idea, then explain it in your own words.

  1. 1

    1. Recognize a polynomial

A Key word · Unit 7PolynomialA sum of terms with nonnegative whole-number powers of the variable.Exactly: A finite sum of terms anxn, with nonnegative integer exponents n and real coefficients an.Mix-up alert: A variable in a denominator or a negative power of x does not make a polynomial.See this in Key words is a sum of terms axn where n is a nonnegative integer. Variable denominators, negative variable exponents, and square roots of x are not polynomial terms.

    3x³ + 2x² − x + 4whole-number powers0, 1, 2, 3, ...
  2. 2

    2. Read the leading term

Combine like terms and write descending powers. The degree is the largest exponent with nonzero coefficient; its coefficient is the leading coefficient. A nonzero constant has degree 0.

  3. 3

    3. Use factored form

In a product such as 2(x−3)2(x+1), add factor degrees to get degree 3. Multiply the leading coefficients to get leading coefficient 2.

  4. 4

    4. Locate zeros

A zero r satisfies f(r)=0. A factor (x−r)m gives zero r with Key word · Unit 7MultiplicityHow many times the same zero appears as a factor.Exactly: A zero r has multiplicity m when (x−r)m divides the polynomial but (x−r)m+1 does not.Mix-up alert: Even multiplicity touches the axis; odd multiplicity crosses it.See this in Key words m. Count distinct zeros separately from their multiplicities. Expand or substitute to check.

Worked example

Guided practice · Medium

Do this: Cover each worked step and try it on paper before reading on.

Construct a polynomial with leading coefficient 3, simple zero 2 and double zero −1. Use p(x)=3(x−2)(x+1)2. Its degree is 3 and p(0)=−6. Substitution at 2 and −1 verifies both zeros.

Step-through

Follow one checked example

Do this: Move through the four steps and check the numbers.

Describe p(x)=−3(x−2)2(x+4).

Worked example

Combine before naming degree

Do this: Work each step on paper before reading the result.

For p(x)=4x3+2x2−4x3+7, the cubic terms cancel. The result is 2x2+7, so degree is 2 and leading coefficient is 2. Reading the first written term without combining would be wrong.

Worked example

Build from given zeros

Do this: Work each step on paper before reading the result.

Build a monic cubic with zeros -2, 1, and 5, each once. Use p(x)=(x+2)(x−1)(x−5). The leading term is x3. Check p(0)=2(−1)(−5)=10, and each required input makes one factor zero.

Mix-up alert

Common mistake

Do this: Explain the mistake and its repair.

Wrong idea: (x+6) gives a zero of 6. Repair: solve x+6=0, giving -6. A factor is an expression; a zero is an input.
