Key words

  • Key word · Unit 1ExponentA number that tells you about a power.Exactly: For a positive integer n, an is the product of n factors of a. Zero, negative and rational exponents extend this definition with restrictions.Mix-up alert: 32=3⋅3, not 3⋅2.See this in Key words
  • An exponent counts factors

For a positive whole-number exponent n, an means n factors of a multiplied together. Parentheses show whether a sign or coefficient belongs to the base.

  • Multiply every pair

A product of sums needs every term from one factor multiplied by every term from the other. Collect like terms only after distributing.

  • Squaring includes a middle term

The identity (a+b)2=a2+2ab+b2 comes from multiplying two complete binomials. A square does not distribute over addition.

  • Check the product

Substitution at a convenient input can catch a missed term. A justified expansion uses distribution, not just one numerical check.

Step-through

4 steps. Tap a number or Show me how it works.

Worked example: multiply two binomials

Do this: Cover the next step and try it yourself.

  1. Step 1: Expand (x+3)(x−2).
  2. Step 2: Distribute each term: x2−2x+3x−6.
  3. Step 3: Combine like terms: x2+x−6.
  4. Step 4: At x=4, the factored form gives 7⋅2=14, and the expanded form gives 16+4−6=14.

Worked example: square a sum

Do this: Cover the next step and try it yourself.

  1. Step 1: Expand (2x+1)2.
  2. Step 2: Write (2x+1)(2x+1), then multiply all four pairs.
  3. Step 3: The terms are 4x2+2x+2x+1, giving 4x2+4x+1.
  4. Step 4: At x=1 both forms give 9.

The middle term comes from two cross-products.

Mix-up alert: check the tempting shortcut

Do this: Explain why the tempting shortcut fails.

Wrong idea: (x+5)2=x2+25. Squaring means multiplying (x+5)(x+5), so the two cross-products add 10x. The full expansion is x2+10x+25.

Do this: Predict the next step on paper, then compare the worked reasoning.

  1. Step 1: Expand (2x+1)(x−3).
  2. Step 2: The four products are 2x2−6x+x−3, giving 2x2−5x−3.
