Do this: Try this on paper, then compare with the worked check.

Key words

  • Key word · Unit 4Exponential functionA rule that multiplies by the same positive factor for equal input steps.Exactly: A function f(x)=abx, with a≠0, b>0 and b≠1.Mix-up alert: A 20 percent increase uses a factor of 1.20, not 0.20.See this in Key words

For y=2⋅3x, find the outputs at zero and one. Check: they are 2 and 6, so the ratio for one step is 3.

Big ideas

The ideas you will use

Do this: Read one idea, then explain it in your own words.

  • Anchor the graph at zero

For y=abx with a>0, b>0 and b≠1, the y-intercept is (0,a). The base b is the output ratio for an input increase of one.

  • Growth or decay

With a>0, b>1 makes the function increasing, while 0<b<1 makes it decreasing. Compare outputs from left to right rather than judging their heights alone.

  • Positive does not mean zero

For this unshifted positive-coefficient form, the domain is all real numbers and range is (0,∞). The graph never reaches y=0 at a finite real input.

  • Approach an asymptote

The horizontal asymptote is y=0. A growth graph approaches it as x decreases without bound; a decay graph approaches it as x increases without bound.

Worked example

Guided practice · Medium

Do this: Cover each worked step and try it on paper before reading on.

For y=8(12)x, plot (−1,16), (0,8) and (1,4). The graph decreases, has all real inputs and positive outputs, and approaches y=0 on the right without crossing it.

Worked example: sketch growth anchors

Do this: Cover the next step and try it yourself.

  1. Step 1: Sketch the features of y=3⋅2x.
  2. Step 2: At x=−1,0,1, the outputs are 32, 3 and 6.
  3. Step 3: The graph increases through these points, with y-intercept (0,3) and horizontal asymptote y=0.
  4. Step 4: Its domain is all real x and its range is (0,∞).

The graph gets close to zero to the left but never reaches it.

Worked example: read a decay graph

Do this: Cover the next step and try it yourself.

  1. Step 1: Consider y=8(12)x.
  2. Step 2: The outputs at x=0,1,2 are 8,4,2. At x=−1 the output is 16.
  3. Step 3: The graph decreases as x increases; its y-intercept is (0,8) and asymptote is y=0.
  4. Step 4: Every output remains positive.

Moving left makes the output larger, not closer to zero.

Mix-up alert: check the tempting shortcut

Do this: Explain why the tempting shortcut fails.

Wrong idea: the horizontal asymptote is the y-intercept. For y=5⋅2x, the intercept is (0,5), while y=0 describes the far-left approach. One is an attained point; the other is a limiting line.
