In class, check it using the supplied capability information.Mix-up alert: Do not infer compatibility from price, capacity, or a plug fitting alone.See this in Key words
  • Key word · Unit 1Wireless connectionA connection with no cable between the devices.Exactly: A connection that carries data without a connecting cable, using radio signals such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.Mix-up alert: Wireless equipment still needs power and a compatible connection.See this in Key words
  • Input: send in

An input device sends data or commands into a computer. A keyboard sends the letters you type. A microphone captures sound. A touchscreen senses your tap. Here, a device can be any piece of equipment, not only your computer.

  • Output: send out

An output device communicates a result. A display shows a picture. Speakers play sound. A touchscreen is both input and output: sensing a tap and showing a picture are different actions.

Step-through

Around the Chromebook

Do this: Step through the picture. Explain each device's job and connection.

Devices do different jobs. A cable or a wireless link connects them, but you still need to check that they work together.

Worked example: a spoken book review

Do this: Read the clues. Explain why the equipment fits the job.

Tavi needs to record a book review on a Chromebook and listen to it. The supplied equipment card says the microphone and headphones work with this Chromebook's connections. The microphone captures Tavi's voice, so it is input. The headphones play the recording, so they are output. The card gives compatibility evidence. Tavi uses the teacher-approved equipment, not a guess based only on the shape of a plug.

Mix-up alert: a fitting plug is not enough

Do this: Explain what you would check after looking at the port label.

A plug fitting a port does not prove that the connection supports your task. Check the supplied compatibility information. If that information is missing, ask your teacher. Do not assume an adapter will solve it or change school equipment yourself.

Question

What does an input device do?

Answer

It sends data or commands into the computer, like a keyboard sending typed letters.

Question

What does an output device do?

Answer

It communicates a result, like speakers playing a sound.

Question

Can a touchscreen do both jobs?

Answer

Yes. Sensing your tap is input. Showing an image is output.

Question

What is a peripheral?

Answer

Equipment connected to a computer for a job such as input, output, or storage.

Question

What is a physical port?

Answer

A socket where a matching plug connects equipment.

Question

What makes a connection wireless?

Answer

It carries data without a cable between the connected devices. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth use radio signals.

Question

What does compatibility mean?

Answer

Equipment can work together for the stated task.

Question

A plug fits. What should you check next?

Answer

Check the supplied compatibility and capability information. Fitting alone does not prove it will do the task.

Question

Does wireless mean no power is needed?

Answer

No. Wireless removes the connecting data cable, not the need for power.

Question

Tavi records a spoken book review. What job is the microphone doing?

Answer

Input. It captures sound and sends it into the computer.

Question

Speakers play the recorded book review. What job is this?

Answer

Output. They communicate a result as sound.

Question

Can a connected external storage drive be a peripheral?

Answer

Yes. Peripherals are not limited to input equipment.

Question

What signals do Bluetooth and Wi-Fi use?

Answer

Radio signals.

Question

The equipment card does not say whether a connection supports your task. What should you do?

Answer

Ask your teacher instead of assuming an adapter will solve it.

Question

How is a port different from the equipment plugged into it?

Answer

The port is the socket. A matching plug connects equipment there.

How saving works

  • Your answers save in this browser on this device as you go.
  • Your sentence and your name are never saved in this browser. They stay only on this page until you close it, and in a PDF you download.
  • Your teacher sees nothing until you turn it in on Google Classroom. This site can't see Classroom.
  • Anyone using this browser can see saved answers. On a shared computer, use Forget when you finish.
  • Finished work stays until the end of the school year. Unfinished work stays for 30 days.
