Big ideas

Meet the five roles

Do this: Read each role. Say its big job word out loud.

  • Internet

The Internet CARRIES the messages. It is the giant network of cables, wires, and wifi that connects computers all over the world.

  • Web

The Web IS the collection of pages and resources, like pictures and videos, that you can visit. The Web travels on the Internet.

  • Browser

A browser SHOWS pages and lets you interact with them. Chrome, Safari, and Edge are browsers.

  • Search Engine

A search engine FINDS pages for you. Google Search and Bing are search engines.

  • Web Server

A web server HOLDS pages and SENDS them when someone asks. It is a computer that stays on, waiting for requests.

Tip: Each role has one big job word: CARRIES, IS, SHOWS, FINDS, HOLDS. Learn those five words and you know this whole topic!

Step-through

Five roles, one picture

Do this: Step through the picture. Say each role's big job word.

Each role has a different job when you visit a page.

Whole picture, 5 steps

5 steps. Tap a number or Show me how it works.

Worked example: opening a video page

Do this: Read the walk-through. Name each role's job as you go.

First, you open your browser. It SHOWS pages. Next, you type a question into a search engine. It FINDS a video page for you. Then you tap the video. The Internet CARRIES your request to the web server, which HOLDS the page and SENDS it back. Last, you watch the video. That page is part of the Web, which IS the collection of pages you can visit.

Mix-up alert

The big mix-up

Do this: Read this twice. It is the mistake people make most.

The Internet and the Web are NOT the same thing. The Internet is the roads. The Web is the stuff that travels on the roads.

Watch

Watch: What is the world wide web?

Do this: Watch the video. Listen for what the web is compared to.

Watch for:

  • What place the video compares the web to
  • How pages are connected to each other
  • Why the way the web is organized is like how your brain thinks

From TED-Ed

The linked video is free to watch. The creator may offer optional paid resources; they are not needed for this lesson. If YouTube is blocked, use the lesson notes and worked examples here.

Tip: After the video, try saying in one sentence how the Web is different from the Internet.

From other sites

Watch and explore

Do this: Pick one to see the same ideas another way.

  • What is the Internet?

    Code.org, about 4 minutes

    Watch for:

    • Who the video says is in charge of the Internet
    • What the Internet is made of
    • Why messages are broken into small blocks
Open on YouTube↗ (opens in a new tab)
  • The Internet: How Search Works

    Code.org, about 5 minutes

Watch from the start to 3:20

    Watch for:

    • Why a search doesn't search the Web live
    • What the search engine prepares ahead of time
    • How it chooses which page comes first
Open on YouTube↗ (opens in a new tab)

Video not loading? It might be blocked on this wifi. Try it at home.

How saving works

  • Your answers save in this browser on this device as you go.
  • Your sentence and your name are never saved in this browser. They stay only on this page until you close it, and in a PDF you download.
  • Your teacher sees nothing until you turn it in on Google Classroom. This site can't see Classroom.
  • Anyone using this browser can see saved answers. On a shared computer, use Forget when you finish.
  • Finished work stays until the end of the school year. Unfinished work stays for 30 days.
