Values, meaning, and the tools we use

Do this: Read each idea. Explain what you would need to know about a number before using it.

You need context to interpret data correctly.Mix-up alert: A neat table is not context by itself. Labels must say what each value means.See this in Key words tells you what the data are about. The number 18 could mean chairs, minutes, or a room number. You need that detail to use it correctly.

  • Labels help you understand

Putting values in a table with clear labels can make their meaning easier to see. Sorting or adding numbers is not enough on its own. You still need to know what the numbers stand for.

  • The equipment: hardware

Key word · Unit 1HardwareThe physical equipment.Exactly: The physical parts of a computer system, such as a keyboard, microphone, processor, or screen.Mix-up alert: The screen is hardware. The app it displays is software.See this in Key words means the physical parts of a computer system, such as a keyboard or screen. The keyboard can take in your data. The screen can show a result.

  • The instructions: software

Key word · Unit 1SoftwareThe programs and instructions.Exactly: Programs and instructions used by a computer system, such as a spreadsheet or drawing application.Mix-up alert: A button drawn on screen is part of a software interface, not another physical button.See this in Key words means programs and instructions. A spreadsheet app follows instructions to work with your values. Hardware and software work together, but the screen is not the app.

Tip: Ask: what does this value stand for? A label can turn a mystery number into something you can explain.

Step-through

From counts to a choice

Do this: Follow the values. Notice which labels make the numbers useful.

A club needs seats for a meeting. Numbers help only when you know what they mean.

4 steps. Tap a number or Show me how it works.

Worked example: enough seats?

Do this: Read the example. Find the data, the context, and the useful conclusion.

Nia types two counts into a Chromebook spreadsheet: 18 people attending and 15 chairs available. Each person needs one chair. The numbers are data. The labels give context. Subtracting gives 18 - 15 = 3, so the club needs 3 more chairs. That meaning is information Nia can use. The keyboard is hardware; the spreadsheet app is software.

Mix-up alert: neat numbers still need meaning

Do this: Explain why putting two numbers in a neat row does not tell their whole story.

Data are not always numbers, and information is not just data in a prettier table. You need context and interpretation. Also, the physical screen is hardware. A button drawn on that screen belongs to the software interface; it is not another physical button.

Question

What are data?

Answer

Represented values, such as numbers, typed characters, or sound samples.

Question

What is information?

Answer

Meaning obtained by interpreting data in context.

Question

Why is the number 18 not enough to plan seats?

Answer

You need context: does 18 count people, chairs, or something else?

Question

Can a typed word be data?

Answer

Yes. Its typed characters are data. Data are not limited to numbers.

Question

How do table labels help you use data?

Answer

They tell you what the values describe, helping you interpret them.

Question

What is hardware?

Answer

The physical equipment of a computer system, such as its keyboard and screen.

Question

What is software?

Answer

Programs and instructions used by a computer system, such as a spreadsheet app.

Question

Is a button drawn by an app a separate piece of hardware?

Answer

No. The drawn button is part of the software interface. The physical screen is hardware.

Question

How do a keyboard and spreadsheet app work together?

Answer

The keyboard is hardware that takes in typed values. The app is software that follows instructions to work with them.

True or false

Does the meaning fit?

Do this: Choose True or False. Read why, even when you got it right.

Statement 1 of 5

Data must be numbers, never letters or sounds.

Question

Can a sound sample be data?

Answer

Yes. Data can include sound samples as well as numbers and typed characters.

Question

Answer

No. You still need context to interpret the values.

Question

What turns counts with context into useful information?

Answer

Interpreting what the counts mean.

Question

A club has 18 people and 15 chairs, with one chair needed per person. What does it need?

Answer

3 more chairs. The labels and the seating need give the counts meaning.

Question

An app shows a button. Which part is hardware?

Answer

The physical screen is hardware. The drawn button belongs to the software interface.

Question

Why is a spreadsheet app software rather than a physical part?

Answer

Software means programs and instructions, not the equipment.

How saving works

  • Your answers save in this browser on this device as you go.
  • Your sentence and your name are never saved in this browser. They stay only on this page until you close it, and in a PDF you download.
  • Your teacher sees nothing until you turn it in on Google Classroom. This site can't see Classroom.
  • Anyone using this browser can see saved answers. On a shared computer, use Forget when you finish.
  • Finished work stays until the end of the school year. Unfinished work stays for 30 days.
