  • Seeing is not saving

Seeing an edit on your screen does not prove that edit was saved. Some apps save automatically. Check the save status and reopen the intended file to check the saved copy.

Tip: Think worker, desk, cabinet. The worker does the task, the desk holds current work, and the cabinet keeps saved work. This is a memory aid, not a picture of the inside!

Follow the work

Worked example: a club poster

Do this: Read the story. Point out the saved version and the unsaved change.

Nia edits a club poster on a Chromebook. The CPU follows editing instructions using data in RAM. She saves a copy to the Chromebook's storage and checks it. She then adds a star, but this change is not saved anywhere. If the Chromebook shuts down now, for example because the battery runs out, RAM loses its contents. The saved poster remains in storage, but that copy has no star. In an app with autosave, she would check what actually saved before deciding what was lost.

Mix-up alert: RAM is not a saved copy

Do this: Say which part keeps a file after power is off.

More RAM gives more working space. It does not replace the CPU or add room to persistent storage. A file in storage can survive power being off. Work held only in RAM cannot.

Question

What does the CPU do?

Answer

It carries out program instructions, such as calculating a total.

Question

What does RAM hold?

Answer

Data and instructions being used right now. It is working memory.

Question

What does persistent storage keep?

Answer

Saved files and programs, including when power is off.

Question

What does volatile mean for RAM?

Answer

RAM does not keep its contents without power.

Question

Does turning a Chromebook off erase its saved files?

Answer

No. Persistent storage keeps saved files without power. That is different from RAM.

Question

Does persistent mean impossible to lose?

Answer

No. Files can still be deleted, damaged, or lost with a damaged device.

Question

An edit appears on screen. Is that proof it was saved?

Answer

No. Check the save status and the intended saved file. Some apps save automatically.

Question

Does adding RAM give an archive more persistent storage?

Answer

No. RAM is working space, not extra space for saved files.

True or false

Keep the jobs separate

Do this: Choose True or False. Read each explanation.

Statement 1 of 5

RAM's job is to carry out a program's calculations.

Question

Which part carries out instructions to calculate a club total?

Answer

The CPU, not RAM.

Question

Where can saved programs remain while power is off?

Answer

In persistent storage.

Question

In Nia's example, a star was never saved. Does the saved poster have it after shutdown?

Answer

No. The saved poster remains, but it has no star.

Question

How can you check which poster version was saved?

Answer

Check the save status, then reopen the intended saved file.

Question

Why should you check save status instead of assuming every recent edit is lost?

Answer

Some apps save automatically. Check what actually saved.

Question

What does more RAM give a Chromebook?

Answer

More working space, not a replacement CPU or more persistent storage.

Question

Can a saved file be lost even though storage is persistent?

Answer

Yes. Deletion or damage can still lose it.

How saving works

  • Your answers save in this browser on this device as you go.
  • Your sentence and your name are never saved in this browser. They stay only on this page until you close it, and in a PDF you download.
  • Your teacher sees nothing until you turn it in on Google Classroom. This site can't see Classroom.
  • Anyone using this browser can see saved answers. On a shared computer, use Forget when you finish.
  • Finished work stays until the end of the school year. Unfinished work stays for 30 days.
